Journal: Free write. Good Things Read through Ch-31 by Monday Raft and Discussion Web standards are in Paper update – grades by Monday Grammar mini-lesson on commonly misused words. (It’s/its; they’re/their/there; then/than; lose/loose; to/too/two; you/you’re; could’ve/would’ve/should’ve). Practice - On loose leaf paper, work with a partner to write 5 sentences using the words you’re assigned. Then switch with another group and review their sentences. 2-26-14 Journal: Why do people use racial slurs? How do racial slurs hurt us? Have you ever used a slur to insult someone? Discuss extra assignment for late papers. Introduce controversy over teaching Huck Finn in high schools. Watch Larry Wilmore segment from The Daily Show Review Discussion Web strategy. Students read the two articles and make notations of evidence for and against the central question on the template. With one partner, students take turns sharing their views and supporting evidence. Then the two partners join up to make a group of four and all take turns sharing their views and evidence; groups try to reach a consensus if possible. . Each group chooses a spokesperson to share the group’s conclusion and cite reasons. Discuss responses as a class. After the class discussion, students use their notes to respond.
